At least eight soldiers were killed and 14 others were injured on Saturday after a suicide bomber blew up a car loaded with explosives outside a military base in the Somali capital Mogadishu, a Somali police officer said.
The death toll is expected to rise, Capt. Mohamed Hussein said.
The suicide bomber attacked the base of the April 12 military brigade, near a recently reopened sports stadium, in the Warta-Nabadda district, explained police colonel Ahmed Muse.
According to witnesses, ambulance sirens could be heard as police cordoned off the area. Huge clouds of smoke billowed out of the explosion site.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but the extremist group al-Shabab, linked to Al-Qaeda, often attacks military targets in Mogadishu.
