Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann required seven match points to advance to the first hard-court semifinal of her career with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over American CiCi Bellis on Friday at the Top Seed Open.
Teichmann’s next opponent will be the winner of the clash between Serena Williams and Shelby Rogers, whose game was delayed by rain on Friday.
This hard-court tournament serves as preparation for the US Open – which begins on August 31 in New York – and is the first tennis tournament to be held in the United States since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
Teichmann served the victory with a 5-3 lead in the second set and was one point away from securing the win, but failed to finish and Bellis broke serve on his fourth chance.
However, in the next game, Teichmann had a seventh chance to end the match and Bellis sent a shot into the net.
The quarterfinals on the other side of the key are formed by the duels Coco Gauff-Ons Jabeur and Jennifer Brady-Marie Bouzkova.
