“Tunnel to Towers Foundation” came to the rescue, after the 9/11 Memorial Museum announce that to protect staff, this year the 18-year tradition of lights shining in New York’s sky in remembrance of the collapsed Twin Towers would be disrupted.
Frank Siller, executive director of the philanthropic group, announced yesterday that they will perform the “Tribute in Light” ”on September 11, 2020, a tradition that dates back to 2002, on the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
The foundation tribute will also include a live reading of victims’ names 2001 and the previous attack (1993) on the World Trade Center, act that had also been canceled this year by the museum, closed since March due to confinement.
No further details were available, other than that the tribute is a “done deal,” said a spokesman for the foundation. Pix11.
“The #TowersofLight that shine from New York in homage to the fallen on September 11 are a iconic symbol of hope. The foundation is doing everything possible to make sure that the light towers are back lit, ”said the Twitter account @ Tunnel2Towers
According to its portal, “The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation honors the sacrifice of firefighter Stephen Siller, who gave his life to save others on September 11, 2001. Also we honor our military and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice for our country. “
The initial decision to cancel the 9/11 tribute lights this year -which on a clear night can be seen 60 miles from Manhattan- was made because “the health risks during the pandemic were too great ”for the team of about 40 stagehands and electricianssaid museum spokesman Michael Frazier, quoted by The New York Times.
Since 2002, the “9/11 Tribute in Light” has commemorated the attacks on the Twin Towers: it has 88 lights made especially to create the projections, that have normally risen over the city from the night of September 10 until dawn on the 12th.
