The Internal Income Service (IRS, for its acronym in English) this Monday encouraged more than a million people to renew your personal taxpayer identification number in advance (ITIN) yes expires at the end of this 2020.
In a statement, the IRS explained that ITIN assigned before 2013 should submit renewal requests as soon as possible in order to avoid delays in repayments next year.
The Protection of Americans from Tax Increases Act (PATH) states that ITINs that have not been used on a federal return at least once in the last three years and that were issued before 2013 will expire on December 31, 2020.
It treats -according to the federal agency- the identification numbers whose middle digits is 88. Also, ITINs with center digits 90, 91, 92, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98 or 99 and which were also assigned before 2013 and have not yet been renewed will also expire at the end of the year.
How to renew the ITIN
Through the form W-7, the aforementioned taxpayers may request the renewal of your ITIN. Shall attach the required documentation and indicate on the same form the reason why they need an ITIN. IRS recommends carefully reviewing the indications (in English) of the W-7.
There are three ways to submit the form and documents that the IRS requires:
- Send it to the IRS address listed on the instructions themselves of the form. The attached documents must be certificates by the entity that issues them. IRS will review the entire package and return it to the 60 days.
- Request help from certified processing agents (CAA, which can validate all identification documents and verify that the application is correct before submitting it to the IRS.
- Call to taxpayer assistance center for schedule an appointment in which the identity of the applicant is validated in person. Each family member applying for an ITIN or renewal must be present at the appointment and must have a completed Form W-7 and the required identification documents.
