Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said that the coronavirus situation in Japan’s capital is improving and she intends for the city to host the Olympic Games next year, as planned.
I think the situation is much better than before“Koike said.”We will do our best to prevent coronavirus infections here in Japan and also to welcome athletes from all over the world“.
Koike said last month that Tokyo could declare a state of emergency if the coronavirus situation deteriorates. Daily cases had skyrocketed to more than 400 a day amid a surge in testing.
New cases have been trending down last week, and Tuesday they were at 187 in Tokyo.
Koike said that Tokyo has put in place many concrete measures to combat the contagion, but the arrival and distribution of effective vaccines is an “essential factor” that must be determined so that the Games can be held in 2021 after being postponed this year.
Koike has clashed more than once with the prime minister Shinzo Abe on how to tackle the epidemic.
The official has urged citizens to limit contact and movement, while the Abe government launched a national travel campaign aimed at propping up regional economies.
