Peruvian swimmer Mauricio Fiol has been suspended for eight years for taking steroids just before his anticipated return to competition, after serving a first sanction, in the Pan American Games that were played in his country.
The International Swimming Federation reported Tuesday that Fiol tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid in six separate tests taken between June 30 and September 17 of last year. The FINA panel of judges took the tests as a single infraction.
Fiol tested positive for the same steroid at the 2015 Pan Am Games, and was stripped of the silver medal he earned in the 200-meter butterfly stroke.
He would have returned to compete in the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, after completing a four-year suspension. But he was provisionally suspended in the prelude to the continental event.
FINA said the 26-year-old swimmer will not be able to compete until August 2, 2027.
