Repatriate remains of Veracruz migrants killed by COVID in the US

The remains of 96 Veracruz migrants, who died as a result of Covid-19, have been repatriated to their places of origin.

The director of Attention to Migrants of the Secretariat of Government (Segob), Carlos Enrique Escalante, reported that all of them died in the United States as a result of the coronavirus.

Most of the deaths occurred in New York State, as well as Los Angeles, California; Houston, Texas and Miami, Florida.

The state government, he said, has supported at least 55 families to move the remains of the victims.

And a month ago they delivered six ballot boxes and just last week the remains of two more people were brought in through a commercial airline.

“The first time it was a Sedena plane in which they traveled but in the latter, as there were fewer remains, a commercial line sent the ashes as it should be, two came from Veracruz but in total there were 37.”

The official admitted that due to the repatriation process carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE), the time it takes for the transfer can be up to a month.

“We have to be careful and respect the family’s grief because we are not carrying anything else, they are the remains of relatives, of dear friends who will no longer be able to see their family. I talk with the family, there are cases in which they have not seen them for 20 years and see it again only in ashes, in an urn it breaks your soul “.
