Based on the fact that nearly one in 10 drivers are distracted from their driving while on the move and that distracted, a person might not see up to 50% of the information in their surroundings, the Company’s assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) is addressing the issue for the first time via a new advertising campaign.

“Driving is often done like an automatic process. Yet it is a complex task that requires the full attention of drivers. When our head is elsewhere, it is impossible to react so quickly to an unforeseen situation. The Company is therefore innovating with this new campaign which addresses cognitive distraction for the first time, ”explains Nathalie Tremblay, President and CEO of the SAAQ.

She mentions that each year, on average, from 2015 to 2019, distraction caused 130 deaths (37%), 600 serious injuries (41%) and 18,400 minor injuries (53%).

In addition, speed is still one of the main sources of accidents in Quebec, the prevention campaign “Slow down prevents the worst” will remind you that the amount of fines for speeding violations committed in school zones, during school period, has been doubled since August 1, 2019.

“Back to school means more activities near school zones; a greater number of drivers, pedestrians, cyclists circulating in the same perimeter requires greater vigilance on the part of all users, but in particular on the part of drivers. It is therefore important to remind all drivers that caution is always required, that speed limits must be respected and that it is important to keep all of your attention on the road ”, underlines François Bonnardel, Minister transports.

Note that each year, on average, from 2015 to 2019, speed caused 110 deaths (32%), 405 serious injuries (28%) and 6,300 minor injuries (18%).
