Although it is not a career as such, there are specializations in the area of medicine and psychology that help these specialists to become sexologists. In essence, those who have studied medicine and psychology may have a specialization in this area, but it can also be diversified to educators and social promoters.
What is the role of a sexologist
The sexologists, in general, they evaluate and treat sexual problems that arise in an individual or in the couple, in a clinical context. They also program and run projects to promote sex education.
One way to know the sexual behavior of individuals is through research, and they are in charge of these programs, which also leads them to disseminate their research and scientific knowledge on sexuality.
It should be noted, however, that sexologists with medical or psychology training should not perform all of the aforementioned functions. This brings us to the next guideline, what they specialize in.
As in any area of study, sexology has its specializations, although these have not been officially defined. According to the magazine Psychology and Mind, there are at least 4 specializations: Sex educators, those who deal with sexual disorders, those who deal with organic injuries, and those who work with couples therapy.
Sex educators are mostly teachers and social promoters who have received sexological training to promote sexual education, orient parents, adults and youth on topics such as transsexuality, masculinity and femininity, and promoting protection methods to avoid STDs.
Sexologists who deal with sexual disorders generally have a background in psychology and their goal is to help people who suffer from problems with premature ejaculation, vaginismus, among others.
For their part, those who specialize in organic disorders have a specialization in medicine and are responsible for treating problems related to sexual health, such as diseases and dysfunctions.
By last, therapists help couples solve their intimacy problems, helping them build trust to prevent these problems from undermining their relationship and having more confidence when having sex.
