Coronavirus outbreak on cruise ship in Greek waters


The health authority said the 12 who tested positive were asymptomatic and had a “low viral load.”

MEXICO CITY

Greek authorities reported Monday that 12 crew members of a Maltese-flagged cruise ship sailing near a Greek island tested positive for the coronavirus and that they were isolated on board the ship, with over 1.500 people on board.

The Mein Schiff 6, operated by TUI Cruises, began its journey on Sunday evening in Heraklion, on the Greek island of Crete, with 922 passengers and 666 crew, specified the Greek Ministry of Navigation.
Those who tested positive for COVID-19 were isolated on board and the cruise ship was heading to Piraeus, the country’s main port and near the Greek capital, Athens.

Its original schedule envisages that it would subsequently follow to the western island of Corfu.

After Diagnostic tests were performed on 150 of the crew members, it was found that 12 tested positivethe ministry said. The passengers were screened before boarding and were not part of the tests.

Greek Health authorities anticipate that the ship will arrive on Tuesday and said that a team from the National Public Health Organization will be available to re-analyze the 12 positive cases, as well as anyone other than the ship’s crew and doctor to board deemed necessary. The health authority said all 12 who tested positive were asymptomatic and that they had a ‘low viral load’.
