At least 5,000 Mexicans will participate in Covid vaccine trials

Hugo López-Gatell Ramírez, Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, reported that to guarantee “early access” to the Covid-19 vaccine, the Government of Mexico will participate in phase three of the clinical trials to be carried out by the pharmaceutical company Jansen of the Johnson & Johnson Corporation.

He explained that, worldwide there will be the participation of 60 thousand people and in our country it is expected to achieve the recruitment of at least 5 thousand volunteers, who will be summoned through advertisements in the medical units, where the inclusion criteria will be published and exclusion, with the aim of selecting people with low risk of presenting complications, regardless of their profession.

“One of the important elements to facilitate access – it is not a condition – I want to make it very clear, it is not a conditioning, but it helps us to facilitate early access to Covid vaccines, is that clinical research studies are carried out in Mexico , particularly those of Phase 3, known as controlled clinical trials, “he explained.

Deaths from Covid reach 76 thousand 603

Deaths from Covid-19 rose to 76,603 due to 173 new deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

With regard to hospital occupancy, he pointed out that in general beds, it is 27 percent. In contrast, Nuevo León registered 49, Nayarit 46 and Colima 43 percent.

In beds with a fan, the average occupancy is 23 percent. However, Colima reported 45 percent, Aguascalientes 40 and Mexico City 39 percent.

Covid will increase unwanted pregnancies in girls

Gabriela Rodríguez Ramírez, general secretary of the National Population Council (Conapo), pointed out that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is estimated that this year -conservatively-, an “extra” figure of more than 145 thousand unwanted pregnancies could be registered in girls and adolescents, which will be added to the 373 thousand 661 that are reported annually.

Therefore, the goal of the Government of Mexico is to eradicate adolescent pregnancy, which has always been linked to poverty, and to end sexual violence, “because it is cruel for girls to become mothers.”

Rodríguez Ramírez added that due to this problem, the country will register economic losses of around 63 billion pesos and added that on October 15 they will start awareness campaigns and sex education, one of them focused on girls under 14 years of age. so that they identify and know how to defend themselves against sexual violence.

“Our task is to reduce pregnancies, but Covid-19 has put us a very complicated task, as poverty is going to grow, pregnancy is likely to grow because poverty is going to grow as well,” he warned.
