Elections Québec received 478 candidates for the 9 returning officer positions to be filled in Montérégie, namely for the ridings of Brome-Missisquoi, Châteauguay, Granby, Huntingdon, Iberville, La Pinière, Saint-Hyacinthe, Vachon and Vaudreuil. Across the province, 49 constituencies are in the recruitment process.
The selection process takes place in three stages. Following the registration period, which ended on September 17, applicants’ experience will be assessed based on the information they provided. Between November 2 and 13, candidates who meet the selection criteria will be invited to take an online exam, consisting of scenarios, among other things. Those selected following the examination will ultimately be invited to a selection interview, which will be held by videoconference between January 11 and February 5.
“At the end of this process, the person who will be offered the position of returning officer will have the best profile for the job,” assures Elections Québec media relations manager Julie St-Arnaud Drolet .
The returning officer plans, organizes and carries out activities in preparation for the vote of electors. He manages human, financial and material resources, ensures compliance with the Election Law and supports voters, candidates and political stakeholders. The position is not restricted to retired or unemployed persons, as the successful candidate may obtain unpaid leave to perform this role. (GM)
