The high security of Puente Grande was a myth: Durazo

The head of the SSPC participated this Thursday in the forum “How is security? A dialogue with Alfonso Durazo”, organized by the Colegio de México.

MEXICO CITY.

The condition of maximum security prison of the Federal Center for Social Readaptation (Cefereso), number 2, “Occidente”, of Puente Grande, Jalisco, was a myth, said the head of the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) on Thursday , Alfonso Durazo Montaño.

“The fundamental reason for the closure of the Puente Grande prison is that its status as a high security prison is a myth, it has been irresponsible for the Mexican State to have criminals of such a high degree or persons deprived of liberty (PPL) of such high criminal degree in a prison whose cells, some of them do not even have door knockers, ”said the official.

The head of the SSPC participated this Thursday in the forum “How is security? A dialogue with Alfonso Durazo”, organized by the Colegio de México.

On Monday of this week the Agreement of Secretary Durazo Montaño was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, ordering the immediate closure and disincorporation of Cefereso 2 “Occidente” from the Federal Penitentiary System.

Durazo Montaño explained that the conditions of abandonment of the Puente Grande federal prison did not guarantee respect for the guarantees of the PPL in the place.

“Since it was built, it has not been given a fifth, and although it is true that the architectural design allows the prison to be administered with a certain dignity, its deterioration places the PPLs in conditions of no dignity, in conditions that for the authority it is not possible, despite our claim, to respect human rights, “he said.

The person in charge of public security policies added that, in addition, the poor conditions of Cefereso 2 “Occidente” left open the possibility of escapes.

“Very high risks of escapes, I do not know how they did not occur, because when you see the deplorable conditions in which the prison is located, you come to the conclusion that anything could have happened there,” said Durazo Montaño.

He added that the relocation of the inmates, who were in Puente Grande, was carried out based on security criteria to “end the comfort zone” in which they were.
