The head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), Santiago Nieto, reported that only former presidents Felipe Calderón and Enrique Peña Nieto can be criminally investigated for possible crimes derived from acts of corruption, because they have not prescribed .
He indicated that in the case of Vicente Fox and his predecessors it will no longer be possible to prosecute them by the prescription established in Mexican law.
“When they raise the issue of former presidents to me, what I say is that Felipe Calderón and Enrique Peña Nieto could actually be investigated because the crimes have not prescribed.
“Not so to Vicente Fox or Carlos Salinas de Gortari because the crimes would already be prescribed,” he explained.
During the Seminar on Violence and Peace organized by the Colegio de México, Nieto Castillo indicated that in this scenario the ideal is to have a truth commission so that the public is aware of the possible acts of corruption in which the former presidents could participate, although not can be prosecuted by them.
