Cofepris will speed up the import and use of medicines purchased abroad

MEXICO CITY

The agreement with United Nations announced this Thursday by the President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will allow Cofepris significantly reduce the time it takes to authorize the import and use of drugs purchased abroad.

The figure used is that of equivalence agreements, respecting the sanitary registry of the country of origin, which is the guarantee that Mexico has to be able to reduce deadlines and simplify the documentary requirements.

Regulatory sources consulted by Excelsior, explained that in no way this agreement sets aside the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris), Instead, it gives you tools to do your job faster, performing more agile inspections and corroborating specific data with health authorities Of each country.

Thus, the drugs must come from countries with a regulatory level equal to ours, with health records of origin and already used in the population.

To date, the Government of Mexico has signed equivalence agreements with Australia, Switzerland, the United States, Canada and the European Union.

Previously, the norm established a term of no less than 90 days and indefinitely, to guarantee a medicine purchased abroad, in order to be used in the health sector.

The quality of imported drugs will be guaranteed by the Commission for Analytical Control and Expansion of Coverage (CCAyAC) of the Cofepris, which will pass all the batches to review.
