Death and destruction in Turkey and Greece

ESMIRNA, Turkey.

At least 22 dead and almost 800 injured yesterday caused a strong earthquake that affected Turkey and Greece and caused a minitsunami.

The telluric movement, which was felt in Istanbul and Athens, had its epicenter in the Aegean Sea, southwest of Izmir, Turkey’s third largest city, and near the Greek island of Samos.

The magnitude of the earthquake was evaluated by the United States Geophysical Institute at 7 degrees, and at 6.8 by the Turkish authorities.

In Bayrakli, Izmir province, rescue teams, with sniffer dogs, were trying to reach victims and possible survivors amid the rubble of a collapsed seven-story building, according to the public broadcaster TRT.

The Turkish Emergency and Disaster Management confirmed 20 dead and about 800 injured.

In Greece, the island of Samos was the most affected area: two young people died from the collapse of a wall and nine people were injured, the ERT chain reported.

It was chaos, we have never experienced that … Some buildings have been damaged, particularly a church ”, declared Giorgos Dionysiou, the deputy mayor of Samos.

The earthquake caused a rise in sea level that flooded the streets of Seferihisar, a Turkish city located in the epicenter. The storm surge also swept the shores of the island of Samos.

HUMAN CHAIN

The Turkish coast was the hardest hit. About 17 buildings collapsed.

Bayrakli rescuers, assisted by residents and police, managed to contact a young woman trapped under the rubble by phone. “Don’t worry, we’re here! I’m going to hang up so you can save battery. Decrease the brightness of your screen and remain calm ”, advised a relative under the supervision of a lifeguard.

A human chain was trying to clear the ruins. Sometimes the rescuers demanded silence to try to locate the survivors.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis indicated on Twitter that he had spoken by phone with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to express “his condolences.”

The fact that two neighbors show solidarity in these difficult times has more value than many other things, ”Erdogan replied through the same social network.

CONSULAR ASSISTANCE

The Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) made telephone numbers available for assistance to fellow citizens.

On her Twitter account, Maki Teramoto, general director of Protection of Mexicans Abroad, asked those who require help to contact the Embassies in Greece or Turkey.
