President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that he proposed Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez, current coordinator of Ports and Merchant Marine, as the new head of the Secretariat for Security and Citizen Protection, replacing Alfonso Durazo Montaño, who this Friday formally resigned from the position to to aspire to the candidacy for the governorship of Sonora.

However, Rodríguez Velázquez – who according to the president is recovering from COVID – has not made any public position on whether or not to accept the position, despite the support of various politicians and federal officials such as Olga Sánchez Cordero, head of the Secretariat de Gobernación (Segob), and Claudia Sheinbaum, head of Government of Mexico City.

The Executive said that this nomination does not have to do only with a question of gender quota – she would be the first woman to occupy this place since it was created, more than 20 years ago – but it is because Rosa Icela Rodríguez is a person with experience and has values.

At a press conference, the President highlighted the work that Rodríguez Velázquez did in the security area when he was head of the City Government.

Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez is currently the general coordinator of Ports and Merchant Marine of the Ministry of Communications and Transportation.

She was secretary of the government of Mexico City in the administration of Claudia Sheinbaum and has been a capital official for more than 20 years since the management of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Marcelo Ebrard and Miguel Ángel Mancera.

She has a degree in Journalism from the Carlos Septién García School, and also has studies on public security, national security and governance. She was the general coordinator of Social Communication in the first Legislature of the Legislative Assembly.

With the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in Mexico City, she served as general director of Political Coordination and Social and Citizen Attention in the Government Secretariat from 2000 to 2006.

In the administration of Marcelo Ebrard, from 2006 to 2009 she was the general coordinator of the Government and Public Security Cabinet of the head of government and from 2009 to 2012 she was the head of the Institute for the Care of the Elderly.

With Miguel Ángel Mancera, she arrived as Secretary of Social Development, a position that she held from 2012 to 2015 and then was appointed Secretary of Rural Development and Equity for Communities from 2015 to 2018.

He arrived at the Government Secretariat with Claudia Sheinbaum.

On July 25, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador appointed Rosa Icela Rodríguez as the new general coordinator of Ports and Merchant Marine of the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT).

He worked on Televisa Radio and in the newspapers El Universal, La Afición and La Jornada. She is the co-author of four books focused on the care of the elderly.

He has taught various diplomas, courses and has represented the Government of Mexico City in national and international forums organized by the United Nations (UN), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the World Health Organization ( WHO), among others, work for which he has obtained various recognitions.
