The governor of San Luis Potosí and president of the National Conference of Governors (Conago), Juan Manuel Carreras López, informed that this Monday, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard informed them that Mexico will be the first country in Latin America to participate in the global phase III trial of a possible vaccine against COVID-19 by the international consortium CanSino Biologics.
In a position, Carreras López said that the states that will enter the protocol for the application of vaccine tests are: Aguascalientes, CDMX, Chihuahua, Durango, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Morelos, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Quintana Roo and Veracruz to carry out the tests for which there will be the support of 20 public and private health centers.
Added that this first trial will allow to specify the effectiveness of said vaccine and will involve the participation of 40 thousand volunteers worldwide, of which between 10 thousand and 15 thousand will be Mexican and Mexican in 14 states.
The Potosino president said that the test is a significant step towards approval of a functional vaccine for which it is necessary to measure its effectiveness and to know the reaction of the inhabitants of Latin America.
“And if the evaluation is successful, it puts our country at the forefront of the list to receive vaccines for our population,” said the president of San Luis Potosí.
“Without a doubt, this is encouraging news and from Conago we salute the efforts of the Government of Mexico, and particularly the Foreign Ministry, to make this happen. And we will put all our will to support the test to be carried out successfully”, Carreras López explained.
