Symptoms are similar to those of the flu, and some can become chronic and never go away.
More than 6 thousand people in Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province in northwestern China, tested positive for the bacterial disease brucellosissaid the local government, in an outbreak caused by a leak at a vaccine plant more than a year ago.
The government tested 55,725 people in the city, of whom 6,620 have tested positive for brucellosis so far, Lanzhou authorities said at a news conference, according to a report by state-run Global Times on Thursday.
The figure represented a big jump from 3,245 positive cases of brucellosis registered until September 14.
Humans contract brucellosis through direct contact with infected animals, by eating or drinking contaminated animal products or by inhaling agents in the air, according to the World Health Organization. Symptoms are similar to those of the flu, and some can become chronic and never go away.
According to a statement from the Lanzhou Health Commission dated September, The outbreak originated from a biopharmaceutical factory owned by China Animal Husbandry Industry Co.
Factory used expired disinfectants to make brucellosis vaccines, leaving the bacteria in its residual gas, the agency said, citing the results of an official investigation.
The polluted waste gas then formed aerosols, which were carried by the wind to the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute, where the outbreak was first recorded in November last year, the health commission said.
The brucellosis vaccine production site was closed in December 2019 and dismantled in October, according to the Global Times.
