After losing case, Johnny Depp retires from ‘Fantastic Beasts’


Warner Bros. confirmed Depp’s departure and said it will select another actor for the role.

Johnny depp left the franchise of ‘Fantastic Beasts’ (‘Fantastic Beasts’) after losing his defamation case against the tabloid The Sun over a 2018 article calling him a ‘battering husband’.

Depp said in a letter posted on Instagram Friday that he will step down from the role of obscure wizard Gellert Grindelwald after the studio called for his resignation. Depp said he was making the announcement “in light of recent events.”

I want to inform you that Warner Bros. asked me to step down from my role as Grindelwald in ‘Fantastic Beasts’ and I have respected and agreed to that request, ” Depp said.

We thank Johnny for his work on the films to date, ” the studio said in a statement. The third film installment of ‘Fantastic Beasts’ is currently in production.

Depp also said he will appeal the ruling issued by a British judge this week. After hearing statements from Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard in the notorious case, Judge Andrew Nicol said the allegations against Depp were “substantially true.” Depp sued News Group Newspapers, publisher of The Sun, and its executive editor Dan Wootton, over an article accusing him of assaulting Heard.
