Mexico exceeds one million infections in 8 months

Eight and a half months after the first case of COVID-19 was registered in the country, Mexico exceeded one million infections, which in absolute terms places it in the eleventh position among the nations with the most infections and one of the territories with fewer tests to diagnose, with 10 per 100,000 inhabitants.

In the latest update, the Ministry of Health (Ssa) reported that one million 3 thousand 253 infections are counted, 5 thousand 860 more than the previous day; however, he acknowledged that there are many more if the estimates made by the agency are taken into account. According to technical reports, since October 21 the country exceeded the barrier of one million infections, with an estimate of one million 5 thousand 938 cases.

“There are more than a million, [y] Our national surveillance system follows the WHO recommendations, to focus on serious cases, on health personnel, on priority groups, so yes, we crossed a million positive results, we had crossed it in estimated data long ago, but we must to emphasize that thanks to society, to the interventions of state and local governments, the impact of the epidemic has been mitigated and currently 4% of that million cases are active, “said Ricardo Cortés Alcalá, director of Promotion of health.

He explained that the country adds 98,259 deaths from COVID, an increase of 635 compared to last Friday. He highlighted that to date 745 thousand 361 people have recovered from the virus, which is equivalent to 74% of the total.

Cortés Alcalá took the opportunity to thank the health personnel, who has been in charge of caring for COVID patients, and stressed that just as the threshold of one million infections was crossed, the country is about to reach the figure of 800 thousand recovered patients.

So far, July remains the month with the highest incidence of respiratory disease, with 198 thousand 538 infections, that is, on average 6 thousand 514 were reported each day, although in September there was a decrease in the occurrence of cases, with 4 thousand 788 daily; for October the figure rose to 5 thousand 862 daily infections approximately.

So far in November, 72 thousand 431 positive diagnoses for COVID-19 have been recorded, which is equivalent to an average of 5 thousand 571 daily cases.

Specialists affirmed that this increase in the incidence of the disease is due to the relaxation of hygiene measures and healthy distance; however, they agreed that absolute confinement would be the last option to slow the spread of the virus.
