Considering that energy companies have not had an increase in their prices and that the white corn harvest was good, the head of the Federal Consumer Prosecutor’s Office (Profeco), Ricardo Sheffield, rejected that there will be an increase in the price of the tortilla.
The clarification comes after the National Tortilla Council announced that in December the cost of this staple product would rise between 1 and 2 pesos, which costs between 10 and 18 pesos per kilogram in different parts of the country.
There have been no increases and the white corn harvest was good this year. If nothing has increased, why are they going to raise it? We are not aware of an increase in nixtamalized corn flour. There is no reason to upload it, ”said the attorney.
He commented that even GRUMA and MINSA, the two main manufacturers of nixtamalized corn flour, have not seen increases.
It should be noted that even the National Union of Industrialists of Mills and Tortillas rejected the increase in the price of the kilogram of this input, as it considered that it would be a strong blow to the pockets of Mexicans during the health and economic crisis caused by Covid.
Sheffield Padilla clarified that “there is not a single group of toritlla manufacturers, although they call themselves national, they are regional, and there are more than a dozen important groups, and this one from the State of Mexico began with noise.”
In this regard, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador trusted that there will be no increases to the tortilla, since they have not increased the prices of energy.
